Withered Time of Lovers

An aged woman, hair so gray
Lost her youthful serenity, life's weight so raw
Sitting in her cottage, slowly wasting away
Her unkempt hair, no longer shiny—but thick like straw

How life was so grand in younger years
Pictures of past ghosts, proudly displayed for all
Loss of loved ones though, a life filled with tears
Happy moments captured and framed, both big and small

Loved so astounding, the husband now withered too
The smiles still shine, through sunken cheeks
All their life passed by them, now sitting, not knowing what to do
Losing their words, annoyed and confused when one speaks

Staring at their portal to the outside, absorbing views
Two cats annoy them as they beg to go in and out
On couches and chairs their lives stay glued, watching news
It angrily entertains them, while they curse the cats about

A grand ornate clock, lies dead on the wall
“The batteries have expired”, she gently said
The woman wanting to fix it, afraid it will fall
For that old clock, time has run out, lifeless, hanging dead

The time stays still now, as life in this place runs out
The laughter of the two though, still as youthful in their final breath
The fountain of youth, dried up long ago—a broken spout
Two lovely souls, spending final years together, just awaiting death
