It's a hot and blindingly bright day
Sitting on a tombstone-bench, where I used to play
The birds singing to each other across the lot
Toward the back and center where grandmother rots
There is a grand tree with stretched out arms
Its shadows cast refuge for those alarmed
Bristling leaves and swaying branches dance in welcomed breeze
Many living souls on this Memorial Day visit as they please
For a place of death, today it is full of life
Placing the honored flowers down on a husband and wife
I am alone of course, enjoying the shade
The irony of drifting closer to death, by my family's grave
This is the same place, I enjoyed in my youth—a favorite memory
It's much larger now though, age is never kind and soon we will lie in a cemetery
